Rigid vs Articulated Trucks, and Fleet Matching

Mining dump trucks split into two families. Rigid-frame trucks carry the payload on a stiff chassis and excel on well-maintained haul roads in open-pit and quarry duty; articulated trucks steer through the frame joint and keep all-wheel traction on soft or uneven ground, at the cost of higher tyre wear and slower top speed. Most large open pits run rigid trucks; underground, civil and wet-site jobs run articulated.

Fleet matching is where haulage economics are won. The practical rule is one haul truck per three to four bucket loads of the excavator or loader at the face — under-trucking starves the excavator, over-trucking idles capital. Cycle time (load + haul + dump + return) against payload decides the fleet number, and it should be recalculated for every ramp change, not once at purchase.
