Scrapers

Common specification mistakes: specifying a heaped bowl for a struck-load haul, ignoring moisture content (wet fines double carry-back), and matching a towed scraper to a tractor without the correct hydraulic take-off for the ejector. Yutong quotes against your material density, not a brochure figure, and supplies the tractor-to-scraper match as a package so the drawbar, tyres and bowl are designed as one system.

About Scrapers

Yutong scrapers are single-pass cut-and-fill machines that cut, haul and spread soil in one unit on long, open runs. The CTY9A is a large-capacity towed carry-scraper pulled by a wheel tractor, ideal for bulk earthmoving and land leveling where a powerful pusher tractor already works on site. The self-propelled motor scraper is a wheel-tractor scraper that operates independently for high-volume cut-and-fill on land development, dam and large infrastructure projects. A scraper is most productive on 100 to 500 metre open runs: it eliminates the separate loader-plus-truck cycle and moves earth faster per cubic metre on level or gently sloping terrain. For pushes under about 50 metres a dozer is simpler; for long open runs the scraper wins on cost per cubic metre moved.

Why Scrapers Earn Their Keep in Earthmoving

Scrapers are the only earthmoving machine that loads, hauls and spreads material in a single pass. Within a 500 m to 3 km push-pull cycle, a scraper moves more cubic metres per litre of fuel than a loader-and-tipper combination, which is why mine operators and civil contractors keep them on cut-to-fill operations such as dam embankments, highway subgrades and airport site levelling.

Two configurations matter when specifying: towed carry-scrapers (such as the CTY9A) work behind a four-wheel tractor and shine on long, level hauls where tyre speed and low capital cost win; self-propelled / motor scrapers carry their own engine and are the right choice where cycle times, gradient control and operator productivity decide the job. Yutong's towed range keeps the machine simple: no complex drive train on the scraper unit, lower service cost, and a bowl design that loads cleanly in soft soils and clay.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Bowl capacity (heaped / struck): match to the prime mover's rated drawbar pull — an over-specified bowl simply spins tyres on wet cut faces.
  • Haul distance: below ~300 m, a dozer-and-scraper or excavator-truck spread usually beats a scraper; above ~3 km, truck haulage takes over. Scrapers own the middle band.
  • Cut conditions: in hard or rocky ground, pair the scraper with a ripper on the tractor to loosen the face before the bowl enters.
  • Apron, ejector and tailgate hydraulics: fast, clean ejection prevents carry-back and keeps cycle times predictable.

For contractors bidding on large earthworks packages, the decision is rarely "scraper or truck" — it is the ratio between them. A balanced spread uses scrapers for short-haul bulk fill and trucks for the long run, and that is the configuration Yutong engineers help clients plan from the specification stage.
