Side-by-side specification comparison
Both are 5-tonne class wheel loaders sharing the family cab, controls and service approach. The 953A pushes bucket capacity, breakout force and lift a step higher. Figures are typical ordering data; the final spec matches your material density and truck cycle.
| Parameter | 952A | 953A |
|---|---|---|
| Class | 5-tonne wheel loader | 5-tonne wheel loader |
| Bucket | Standard general-purpose | Larger, higher capacity |
| Breakout force | General-duty | Higher, for hard digging |
| Fuel use per hour | Lower on light duty | Higher on heavy duty |
| Best material | Sand, gravel, light stockpiles | Denser rock, piled material |
| Best cycle | Yard, feeder, light loading | Heavy truck loading |
Bucket and breakout: the duty difference
The 952A is the efficient 5-tonne workhorse, sized for everyday loading: sand and gravel bins, hopper feeding, general yard work and light truck loading. It cycles fast and burns less fuel per hour on that duty. The 953A steps up with a larger bucket and higher breakout force for denser material and tighter loading cycles, where the lighter loader would struggle to fill the bucket cleanly.
The test is what your bucket actually has to bite into. Loose sand pours in and the 952A fills easily. Piled blasted rock or compacted stockpile resists penetration, and the 953A's extra breakout force gets the bucket loaded in one pass instead of two. Two passes on every bucket doubles cycle time and erases any fuel saving on the smaller machine.
Fuel: compare per tonne, not per hour
The 952A burns less fuel per hour on light work, but that is the wrong metric. The number that matters is litres per tonne moved. If the 953A fills a truck in four passes where the 952A needs six, the bigger loader moves more material for the fuel it burns and often wins on fuel per tonne on a heavy cycle. On a light yard where the 953A carries unused power, the 952A wins. Run your material density and truck load target through both.
Tyre and wear follow the material too. Dense, abrasive rock wears tyres and cutting edges faster than clean sand. Spec tyre and edge packages to the material, regardless of which loader you choose, so the maintenance budget is not caught out.
Which loader fits which job
Choose the 952A when: you load loose sand, gravel or light stockpiles; the loader feeds hoppers and works a yard; and low fuel burn per hour matters on light duty.
Choose the 953A when: you load denser rock, run a tight truck-loading cycle, or need the extra breakout for hard digging. For a step up beyond 5 tonnes, the 956H sits above in the range.
Fleet TCO
The cheapest loader per tonne moved wins the bid. The 952A has lower purchase and lower fuel on light work, so it wins on a sand-and-gravel yard. The 953A costs a little more but moves more per cycle on dense material, winning on cost per tonne when the work is heavy. A mixed fleet lets you put 952A units on light yard work and a 953A on the loading bank, sharing operators and parts across the family.
| 952A | 953A | |
|---|---|---|
| Strengths | Low fuel on light duty; fast cycling on loose material | Larger bucket; higher breakout; fills in fewer passes on dense rock |
| Watch out | Two passes on hard piled material | Higher fuel on light duty |
| Best work | Sand, gravel, yard, feeders | Dense rock, heavy truck loading |
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the 952A and 953A loaders?
Both are 5-tonne wheel loaders. The 953A is the step-up with a larger bucket and higher breakout for heavier work. The 952A is the efficient workhorse for lighter everyday loading at lower fuel burn.
How do I choose between them?
Choose the 952A for loose sand and gravel, feeders and yard work. Choose the 953A for denser material, a tight truck loading cycle, or extra breakout on piled rock and hard digging.
Which uses less fuel?
The 952A burns less per hour on light work. The 953A can move more per cycle, so on heavy loading its fuel per tonne may win. Compare litres per tonne moved, not just litres per hour.
Can I run both in one fleet?
Yes. A mixed 5-tonne fleet with 952A units on light yard work and a 953A on heavy loading is common and shares operator skills and parts. Tell us your material densities and we will balance the mix.
Not sure which 5-tonne loader fits your yard?
Send us your material density, truck load target, cycle time and whether the work is light yard or heavy loading. We will model the 952A and 953A and send spec sheets plus a cost-per-tonne estimate. Browse the wheel loader range or all earthmoving machinery.
